Washington, DC – The Latino Leaders Network (LLN) will host a Tribute to Mayors dinner on Thursday, January 22nd in Washington, D.C.  The event will honor Mayor Alvin Brown of Jacksonville, FL with the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award.  In addition, Executive Rushern Baker III of Prince George’s County, MD will be honored with the Chairman’s Award.

The Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award is presented to a mayor from a city with a significant minority population who has exhibited an outstanding commitment to bringing diverse communities together. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will deliver tribute to Mayor Brown and present the award along with LLN founder and chairman, Mickey Ibarra.  The Chairman’s Award is given to elected officials in recognition of outstanding leadership for bringing all communities together.

Special guests include Mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento, CA, President of the US Conference of Mayors, as well as The Honorable Jerry Abramson, former Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky and The White House’s Deputy Assistant to the President and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs.

“We are proud to once again honor two leaders whose example has inspired their communities to find a common voice on issues of importance to all Americans,” noted Mickey Ibarra.

Alvin Brown was sworn in as mayor of Jacksonville, Florida on July 1, 2011.  His vision is to bring Jacksonville together as one community and take it to the next level of greatness as a city of opportunity for all.  He has led initiatives that aim to achieve bold, far-reaching goals that include: partnerships with businesses to grow the local economy and create jobs; supporting schools, teachers, families and the community to improve opportunities for children and adolescents; expanding services for veterans and active-duty service members; reforming city government to make it more efficient, effective and responsive. Through the Mayor's Hispanic American Advisory Board, he has promoted city services among the growing Hispanic community and addressed specific needs within the community.

Rushern Baker III was elected as the seventh County Executive of Prince George’s County in November of 2010.  Mr. Baker has worked closely with other state and regional leaders to pursue positive change, focus on creating jobs, grow the economy, and improve public safety and education.  He created the Prince George’s County Latino Liaison position and supported the first successful Latino candidates for the Prince George’s County Board of Education elected in 2014.  Executive Baker was honored with the National Forum for Black Public Administrators’ National Leadership Award for Public Service and in 2012, Most Innovative Executive of the Year for Minority Business.

LLN is pleased to have Bank of America as Signature Sponsor for this year’s Tribute to Mayors program as well as having Southwest Airlines serve as Co-Sponsor.  The Tribute to Mayors convenes during the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual winter and summer meetings, respectively, to honor mayors who are “bringing their communities together.”
