Washington, DC - The Latino Leaders Network (LLN) will host the Tribute to Mayors Reception on Sunday, June 21st in San Francisco, CA during the US Conference of Mayors annual summer meeting.  The event will honor Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, CA with the Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award.  In addition, District Attorney George Gascón of the City & County of San Francisco will be honored with the Chairman’s Award.

The Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award is presented to a mayor from a city with a significant minority population who has exhibited an outstanding commitment to bringing diverse communities together. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa will deliver tribute to Mayor Garcetti and present the award along with LLN founder and chairman Mickey Ibarra.

“We are proud to honor Mayor Garcetti for his inspiring leadership on diversity to establish a common voice on issues of importance to all communities,” noted Mickey Ibarra.

Special guests include Mayor Kevin Johnson of Sacramento, CA, President of the US Conference of Mayors, as well as The Honorable Willie Brown, former Speaker of the California State Assembly and Mayor of San Francisco.

Eric Garcetti was sworn in as the 42nd Mayor of Los Angeles, California on July 1st, 2013. He is the city’s first elected Jewish mayor and its youngest in more than a century. Prior to becoming mayor of Los Angeles, Garcetti served as Councilmember representing the 13th District, which was dramatically revitalized under his leadership. He was also elected to serve as President of the Los Angeles City Council from 2006 to 2012.

Mayor Garcetti’s "back to basics" agenda is focused on job creation and solving everyday problems for L.A. residents. On April 8th, he released the first-ever Sustainable City Plan that targets economics and equity by setting goals for housing, transportation, green-job creation for improving air quality and quality of life for low-income residents. Mayor Garcetti is the son of a Jewish mother and a father of Mexican and Italian descent. He studied as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and the London School of Economics and taught at Occidental College and University of Southern California. Mayor Garcetti is a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy reserve and earned his B.A. and M.A. from Columbia University.

“I am also delighted to present the Chairman’s Award to District Attorney George Gascón for his commitment to reducing crime by taking a more enlightened and effective approach to offender sentencing” said Mickey Ibarra.  The Chairman’s Award is given to elected officials in recognition of outstanding leadership for bringing all communities together.

George Gascón was sworn in as the District Attorney (DA) for the City and County of San Francisco on January 5, 2012. He is the first Latino to hold the office in San Francisco and is the nation’s first police chief to become DA. Gascón created the nation’s first Alternative Sentencing Program to support prosecutors and protect victims and community by addressing offenders’ risk factors to break the cycle of crime and recidivism. In addition, he partnered with the Unified School District to launch innovative programs to reduce truancy and bullying and increase mentoring opportunities for youth.

LLN is pleased to have Bank of America as Signature Sponsor for this year’s Tribute to Mayors program as well as having Walmart serve as Co-Sponsor and AARP as Gold Sponsor, with additional support from CH2M, eCitation Coalition, Edison International, GEICO, Hudson, HDR, ICSC, The Coca-Cola Company, ecoATM, and Southwest Airlines as the Official Airline of LLN. The Tribute to Mayors convenes during the U.S. Conference of Mayors annual winter and summer meetings, respectively, to honor mayors who are “bringing their communities together.”
