Honoring Jaime Camil, Lynne and Joseph Horning, and Carla Hübner 2017 Noche de Estrellas

Washington, DC – On Monday, June 5, 2016 at 6:30 pm, GALA Hispanic Theatre will host its annual Noche de Estrellas benefit event at the Organization of American States honoring three extraordinary leaders. The 2017 honorees are: Jaime Camil, of the CW TV series “Jane the Virgin,” for Artistic Excellence and Inspiration; Lynne and Joseph Horning for Philanthropy in the Arts and Social Services; and Carla Hübner, Artistic Director and Founder of The In Series, for Service to the Arts. Proceeds from the event will support GALA’s youth education programs, which include the Paso Nuevo program, an arts and academic enrichment program for Latino teens in the District of Columbia that was recognized with a 2012 National Arts and Humanities Youth Arts Program Award by First Lady Michelle Obama.

 

In addition to the Honoree Awards, Noche de Estrellas will feature performances by celebrated Salvadoran flamenco dancer Edwin Aparicio, curates GALA’s annual Fuego Flamenco Festival and is the recipient of the Order of the Civilian Cross from the King of Spain; soprano Anamer Castrello; and Felicia Miranda, a member of Paso Nuevo. Alejandro Negrón, co-host of Agenda Radio DC, will be Master of Ceremonies for Noche de Estrellas.

 

Silent and live auctions will offer up exotic get-aways to Mexico and the Caribbean, Broadway tickets, and more. The event is black tie optional and will be attended by several Latin American ambassadors and international diplomats, leaders of DC’s arts and business communities, city officials, and philanthropists.

 

The Noche de Estrellas event will be held at the Hall of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS) at the corner of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW.

 

THE HONOREES

 

Jaime Camil (Artistic Excellence and Inspiration) is a Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, Teen Choice-nominee and Imagen Award winner, named by VANITY FAIR as one of the Best New TV Characters. He plays the scene- stealing comedic bright spot Rogelio de la Vega on the CW hit-series Jane the Virgin.” Mexican-born actor-singer-heartthrob Jaime Camil is a household name stateside and a bona-fide superstar in Latin America, starring in award-winning films (PULLING STRINGS, 200 CARTAS), mega-hit telenovelas (Por Ella Soy Eva”, La Fea Más Bella”) and recording four platinum selling albums. He has also led many musicals in Mexico City and the US, including a 2016 Broadway run starring as Billy Flynn in Chicago and the upcoming Hollywood Bowl production of Mamma Mia! as Sam Carmichael.” Camil will additionally appear in the indie boxing film GLASS JAW set for a 2017 release.

 

 

Joseph and Lynne Horning (Philanthropy in the Arts and Social Services)

Joseph F. Horning is Chairman and CEO of Horning Brothers, a real estate development firm which he founded with his brother Larry in 1958. Over the past 47 years, the company has developed (and still manages) over $200 million in apartments and retail centers in the Washington, D.C. area.. Two of the company’s most notable projects are the Saratoga, an award-winning luxury high-rise on Connecticut Avenue and Tivoli Square, an adaptive re-use of the National Historic Landmark Tivoli Theater in Columbia Heights. The mixed-use project was awarded Washington Business Journal’s “Best Real Estate Deal of 2004,” Horning Brothers invited GALA Theatre to partner to build out its 264-seat theater, the cultural anchor of Tivoli Square. Mr. Horning  was one of the first developers to revive the dilapidated H Street NE and 14th Street NW corridors following the 1968 riots.

Lynne Horning  is an artist and arts advocate. She is a partner with Troyer Art Gallery in Washington DC, and owner of the independent bookstore, Bookworks, in Telluride Colorado.  Lynne serves on the Council of Advisors to the Levine School and the Santa Fe Chamber Music, as well as serving as Chair of the Education Committee for the Phillips Collection. She also has actively served on Boards of THE ARC, City Museum, Capital Area Community Food Bank, and For Love of  Children. She was named a 2002 Washingtonian of the Year and was honored by the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region in 2016.

 

Carla Hübner (Service to the Arts) founded the In Series as the Concert Series of the former Mount Vernon College, in 1982-83, and still serves as its Producing/Artistic Director. During the 1990’s she began producing full chamber operas and Spanish or Latin-American zarzuela (operetta), alongside an expanding multi-disciplinary arts season, reflecting her interest in dance, in new works, in the classics of popular music, and in the synergy of the performing arts.  Productions exploring Spain and Latin-America’s music-and-poetry heritage are consistently part of the In Series’ annual season since 1993, many of them presented at GALA. The In Series became an independent non-profit organization in 2000, its current season marking 17 years as a vital presence in the DC arts community.  During Carla’s former career as a concert pianist (she was a protégé of the legendary Claudio Arrau), she won critical acclaim for performances in recital, with orchestra,  and on radio in the US, England, Germany, Italy, Holland, and Latin-American countries, including Puerto Rico and her native Chile.
