Washington, DC – GALA Hispanic Theatre will present a free public performance of Out of the Shadows on Saturday, July 14 at 7 pm in the Columbia Heights Plaza, located at 14th and Park Road & Kenyon Streets NW.

Working with Ecuadorian immigrant and award-winning performance artist José Torres-Tama, community members will present a creative response to the removal of TPS.  A result of bilingual theater and voice workshops led by the artist, Out of the Shadows gives voice and presence to a vulnerable population in our community. Through their stories of courage and resistance, immigrant youth, adults, day laborers, and migrant workers will emerge out of the shadows of persecution in this timely piece that speaks to the headlines today.

José Torres-Tama is a writer, poet, journalist, educator, and visual and performance artist based in New Orleans who was an artist-in-residence this year at GALA. He has written and performed 10 solo shows, including The Cone of Uncertainty: New Orleans After Katrina and Aliens, Immigrants & Other Evildoers, which GALA co-commissioned and presented. His current project, the Taco Truck Theater /Teatro Sin Fronteras, was recently presented in Minneapolis at Pangea World Theater. Torres-Tama also contributed commentaries to NPR’s Latino USA that explored the many challenges of Latino immigrant workers in post-Katrina New Orleans, and has toured to England, Poland, Slovenia, Canada, Mexico, and throughout the United States.
