Washington, DC – GALA is pleased to present again Cuareim 1080 (C 1080), the renowned percussionist candombe group from Uruguay who last appeared at GALA in Candombe: Tango Negro in 2004.  Cuareim 1080 will be presented at the GALA Theatre on December 12 at 8 pm.  The evening will also include the screening of Llamadas Madres, which looks at the origins of candombe in the Sur Ansina and Cordón neighborhoods of Montevideo, and conclude with a drumming session that encourages audience participation.

GALA Theatre is located at 3333 14th Street, NW, in the bustling Columbia Heights neighborhood.  Discount parking is available at the Giant Food garage behind the theater with validation at the GALA box office.

Cuareim 1080 is the winner of the 2014 Carnival Parade in Uruguay, the Desfila de Llamadas del Carnaval Uruguay. The group is led by Waldemar “Cachila” Silva, a live witness to the world of the Medio Mundo., one of the most famous tenements inhabited by many of Montevideo’s urban poor, including Afro-Uruguayans and immigrants.  Built during the turn of the century, it reached its apogee in the 1950s as the center of candombe, an Afro-Uruguayan rhythm and dance rooted in carnival festivities.  Now a major component of Uruguayan music and one of its foundations, candombe has been inscribed since 2009 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. “C 1080” refers to 1080 Cuareim Street, the original address of the Medio Mundo.
