San Juan, Puerto Rico - Dr. Antonia Novello, 14^th Surgeon General of the United States has established the Angels of Maria Awards to honor individuals, organizations and institutions throughout the United States that have provided significant assistance to the Island of Puerto Rico and / or PuertoRicans who were severely affected by the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Maria in 2018.

   Forty five awards will be given on August 8, 2018 at the Hyatt House hotel, in San Juan. They were selected based on their contributions in various areas.

  These awards are the first of its kind and their goal is to recognize the unsung heroes that through their actions, measures or doing have played a significant role in the relief efforts.

   “Angels are not only in heaven but they were present in Puerto Rico during and after hurricane Maria and the time has come to take them out of their anonymity to acknowledge and honor them”, stated Dr. Novello, who was born in Puerto Rico.
