Washington, DC - The Smithsonian Latino Center announces the addition of new board members Millie Magid and Dr. Faustino “Tino” Bernadett to the Smithsonian National Latino Board. The board is composed of philanthropists, corporate leaders and individuals who bring experience, geographical balance, diverse backgrounds and cultural expertise to the Smithsonian Latino Center. Magid and Bernadett will join board members in advising the Director, Eduardo Díaz, on programming, outreach, advocacy and fundraising for the center. Each will serve initial three-year terms.

Millie Magid

Magid is a principal real estate broker at Magid Realty in Long Island, a philanthropist and a passionate activist for humanitarian causes. She currently serves on the board of Innovation Africa, an organization that provides renewable energy technology and humanitarian services in seven African countries, and on America’s Voices in Israel, an organization that promotes understanding of Israel and the Middle East. Magid is the founder and co-chair of the Center for Israel at the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center in Long Island and is actively engaged with U.S.–Israel exchange programs.

A native of Lima, Perú, Magid is a former English as a Second Language educator and attended Parsons Fashion School of Design. Presently, she divides her time between Long Island, Jerusalem and Miami in support of her business and philanthropic causes. She and her husband, Larry Magid, a real estate investor and developer, work together in supporting various organizations.

Dr. Faustino “Tino” Bernadett

Dr. Bernadett is the president of Pacific Healthcare IPA.  He serves on the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Foundation Board of Overseers and as a commissioner of the Hospitals and Healthcare Delivery Commission of Los Angeles County.

Bernadett was inspired by his father, a family physician who was sometimes paid in tamales and was devoted to serving his community and teaching medical students and residents.  After graduating from UCSF School of Medicine, Bernadett practiced anesthesia in Southern California until transitioning to the practice of pain management. He later earned an MBA as health systems grew increasingly complex and his role in leading groups of physicians increased.

Bernadett and his wife Dr. Martha Molina Bernadett recently funded The Faustino and Martha Molina Bernadett Presidential Chair for Medical Education at USCF, an endowment that supports curricular development to address the challenges and opportunities involved in caring for the increasingly diverse population of California and the nation. The Bernadetts have also endowed a scholarship at UCSF for Spanish-speaking medical students.  The Bernadetts also cofounded The Molina Foundation, a 501(c)3 public charity whose mission is to reduce disparities in access to education and health.
