GALA’s Weekend Screenings La Nueva Ola: Films from Mexico, Cuba & Spain

Washington, D.C.  - La Nueva Ola: Films from Mexico, Cuba, & Spain continues today and Sunday at GALA Hispanic Theatre. All films are in Spanish with English subtitles. The Film Festival is curated by Carlos Gutierrez of Cinema Tropical and sponsored by Embassy of Spain in Washington, SPAIN Arts & Culture, Embassy of Mexico in Washington, Mexican Cultural Institute, Cinema Tropical, and Cuban Interests Section in USA.  

Here’s the line-up of screenings this weekend provided by GALA Theatre:

Saturday, 12/6

2 pm:  LOS NIÑOS SALVAJES (THE WILD CHILDREN) from Spain – DC Premiere! Directed by Patricia Ferreira, 2012, 100 min. In Spanish with English subtitles. Starring Alex Monner, Alberto Baro & Marina Comas. Winner of Best Film, Screenplay, Supporting Actress & Actor at the 2012 Málaga Film Festival; nominated for three Goya Awards. An engrossing drama and a cry for social change, it tells the story of three teens in a big city who are perfect strangers to their parents, teachers, and themselves. Their emotional isolation has unexpected and dire consequences.

7 pm   JUAN DE LOS MUERTOS (JUAN OF THE DEAD) with film post discussion. Directed by Alejandro Brugués, Cuba/Spain co-production, 2011, 97 min.  Starring Alexis Díaz de Villegas & Jorge Molina. Winner of numerous awards, including 2013 Goya Award for Best IberoAmerican Film. A zombie comedy with the subtext of the Cuban Revolution, this irreverent satire was a sensation when it premiered in Cuba. Juan is initially convinced that the attack is another stage of the Revolution, but when he realizes that the attackers are zombies and killing them is an acquired skill, he decides to make some money from it…and a business is born.

9:30 pm    QUEBRANTO (DISRUPTED) a DC Premiere with film post discussion. Directed by Roberto Fiesco, Mexico, 2013, 95 min. A powerful documentary, the heart of which is a conversation between 70-year old actress Dona Lilia Ortega and her daughter, Coral Bonelli, a cabaret performer who started her career as a male child actor, Fernando Ortega (“Pinolito”) in the 1970s Mexican film industry.

SUNDAY 12/7    

2 pm   A film classic AVENTURERA (ADVENTURESS). Directed by Alberto Gout, Mexico, 1950, 101 min. Starring Ninón Sevilla, Miguel Inclán, Tito Junco & Andrea Palma. One of the most popular Mexican films ever made, this cult sensation is a cabareteras, a film noir and musical hybrid popular in Mexico in the ‘40s and ‘50s. Starring the immortal Ninón Sevilla, a cross between Rita Hayworth and Carmen Miranda, it follows the rise and fall of a nightclub star with a dark past.
