WASHINGTON, DC [CapitalWirePR] June 4, 2015 –On June 5th the Carlos Rosario School will host a historic street naming ceremony and celebration to honor the national award-winning Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School that has transformed the lives of over 70,000 immigrants for the past four decades.

The Council of the District of Columbia unanimously voted to commemoratively name the 500 block of V Street NE as Sonia Gutierrez Campus Way. The ceremony will take place in front of the Sonia Gutierrez Campus in recognition of the legacy and impact of Sonia Gutierrez, the Carlos Rosario School's founder and innovative educator, for her 43 years of service to the immigrant communities of Washington, DC.

This is the first time in Washington, DC history that a street is named in honor of a Latina.

“I am honored to be the namesake of Sonia Gutierrez Campus Way. I appreciate DC government’s recognition of the transformative work we do at the Carlos Rosario School and of the potential to have an even greater impact with the Sonia Gutierrez Campus,” said Gutierrez.

In the fall of 2013 the Carlos Rosario School opened a new state-of-the-art workforce development campus, named for the School’s founder. The new site, located on the street to be commemoratively named, provides advanced ESL, GED and career training programs to D.C.’s diverse workforce.

“It is only fitting that we honor the great work of the institution and recognize the newly built campus and its mission to prepare our diverse immigrant population to learn and succeed in a nation where immigrants have played an integral role in the foundation of America,” stated Councilmember Anita Bonds who co-introduced the act along with Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie.

“The name Sonia Gutierrez is known to be synonymous with education, it will now be stamped on the streets of our city,” said Franklin Garcia, US Representative (Shadow).
