Washington, DC – Justice at Stake Deputy Executive Director Liz Seaton issued the following statement regarding Texas, Missouri, and other states considering legislation to prosecute officials – including judges – who enforce federal firearms law:

“It would be wrong to lock up judges for applying the rule of law, and legislation advancing in some states proposes to permit exactly that. Even if you disagree strongly with federal gun restrictions, slapping handcuffs on judges who do their job is dangerous overreach. Those who oppose federal gun laws can lobby to change them before Congress. Undermining the judiciary is not the answer.”

Justice at Stake is a nonpartisan, nonprofit campaign working to keep America’s courts fair and impartial. Justice at Stake and its 50-plus state and national partners educate the public, and work for reforms to keep politics and special interests out of the courtroom – so judges can protect our Constitution, our rights and the rule of law.
