CARECEN Immigration Reform Appeal

Washington, DC -

Last week the Trump Administration announced the decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for nearly 200,000 Salvadorans. CARECEN is deeply pained by the government's recent decision; the loss of status for people with TPS will impact far more than the 32,000 Salvadorans in our region. It also affects more than 192,000 U.S. citizen children throughout the country. TPS beneficiaries are hardworking individuals who have substantial roots in this country and have made major contributions to our society; they support local economies, pay into social security, and about 30% own homes. Beneficiaries will have to make a difficult decision whether to return to countries of origin that are ill prepared to receive and integrate them, given the limited opportunities and high rates of violence in those countries, or stay in the U.S. under very vulnerable conditions, exposing them to exploitation and abuse in order to ensure their families' success.

CARECEN stands firm and ready to assist and defend this community of immigrants in need. The fight is far from over. We will not sit back and allow this administration to destroy the lives of thousands of individuals who once held legal status and now face the threat of deportation and harm if returned to their country of origin.

CARECEN continues to work with other allies to take this fight to Congress for a stronger voice.  But we cannot do this without your support. You can help us make a difference in immigration today with your financial gift to CARECEN of $50, $100, or $200.
As an organization, we continue to provide quality legal services for our immigrant community, and participate in multiple spaces for their protection, at the local and national levels.  Internationally, we send staff to the region to ensure we have the most up-to-date analysis on country conditions, informing both our service delivery and our advocacy work.  We are building partnerships to expand our legal services and pro-bono network, and we are developing mechanisms to protect as many people from deportation as possible.

The road ahead will not be without struggle, and the impact on the DC region will not go unnoticed. In the past four months, the current administration has also ended TPS protections for Nicaraguans and Haitians. Now it is up to you to stand with CARECEN, our allies, and the community to ensure that immigrants have the future they deserve.
